Professor Norman Sartorius

President of the International Association for the Promotion of Mental Health Programmes

 Professor Norman Sartorius, MD, MA, DPM, PhD, FRCPsych, obtained his M.D. in Zagreb (Croatia). He specialized in neurology and psychiatry and subsequently obtained a Masters Degree and a Doctorate in psychology (Ph.D.). He carried out clinical work and research and taught at graduate and postgraduate levels at the University of Zagreb, at the Institute of Psychiatry in London, at the University of Geneva and elsewhere. Dr Sartorius led the programme of epidemiology and social psychiatry for the World Health Organization (WHO) and served as principal investigator of several major international studies on schizophrenia, on depression and on health service delivery. From 1977-1993, he served as Director of the Division of Mental Health of WHO. During his time as director he led work on the classification of mental disorders, initiated and conducted numerous collaborative studies and advised Governments about mental health service development.

From 1993-1999, Professor Sartorius was President of the World Psychiatric Association (WPA) and later he became President of the Association of European Psychiatrists (AEP). He is now the President of the International Association for the Promotion of Mental Health Programmes and a member of the Board of the Prize of Geneva Foundation. Dr Sartorius holds professorial appointments from various institutions including the Universities of London, New York, St Louis and Zagreb.  He is a Senior Associate of the Faculty of the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland and has published more than 400 articles in scientific journals and wrote or edited some 80 books
